Are historians criticisms of Lawrence Stones three-phase model of the English family justified Free Essay Example, 1500 words
Concern is raised about declining marriage and fertility rates, increased rates of de facto marriage, divorce and lone-parent families, and increased rates of female workforce participation. It is argued that these changes in family life have weakened family bonds and the quality of relationships within families. This in turn is thought to threaten community (Fukuyama 1996: quoted in The Age, 2001). The society of Early Modern age consisted of three classes i. e. nobility, bourgeoisie and peasantry. Nobility was the privileged stratum, while bourgeoisie belonged to the merchants and traders of the middle classes. The peasants made the lower class of society. Early modern era was a very fertile period in respect of education and learning, and for art and literature; art was for moral values, not for the sake of art and the code of puritan ethics was strictly followed. There was harmony in society and education was given priority for the children. Campbell states: The period saw the spread of the printing press and the development of a widespread print culture. This was in the form of government documents like circulars and tax notices, a massive republication of the classical texts for schooling and universities, books on manners, learned books, lives of saints, broadsheets, ballads, and folktales dealing with all manner of subjects from chivalric romances to stories about demons and devils. (Campbell, 2001) The family life before the Industrial Revolution is thought to be simple and contented with affluent affection and strong ties among the members of the family. There was patriarchal family system where the husband/father used to be the head and was considered the authority appointed by the will of the Heavens to look after his family. He was the responsible for providing food, clothes, shelter and protection to his family. Women and children, during that era, were subservient to him and seldom took independent decisions about their life as they revolt and demand freedom in modern world of today. Mothers were compassionate and caring to the children, and they contained special concerns regarding home and family. Thorn comments on Stoneââ¬â¢s portrayal of the society of early modern times as following: Since Lawrence Stones The Family, Sex, and Marriage, 1500-1800, eighteenth-century family history has burgeoned as a field, with many of the assertions most closely associated with Stone--such as the claims that the long eighteenth century saw the advent of the companionate marriage, affective individualism, sentimental motherhood, and reverence for childhood--receiving corroboration and contestation alike.

The Themes Of Totalitarianism In George Orwells 1984
The purpose of government is to promote order while still maintaining personal freedoms. In todays United States, the government implements laws to promote order while still protecting the freedoms of individuals. Americans are not allowed to drive whenever and however they please because there are restrictions on our actions. With these laws, people are still trusted and given the privacy for private acts. Furthermore, George Orwell models a government who consistently abuse their power in society. Element of Trust
Question: Discuss about theElement of Trust. Answer: Introduction: According to the case study, a situation of disbelief is rising in the teaching college of Midwest. The problem is related to the graduate associates of the organization. Chris Walker who is a tenured professor in the college had faith on his graduate associates and took their help while grading exams. On the other hand, Judi wanted to change things and proposed that rules and regulations must be developed to ensure that graduate associates will not perform any serious task. Analysis After analysis the provided case study, it can be said that the case study relates with the Howard Jackson model for systematically developing trust and respect (Ashnai et al., 2016). According to Howard Jackson respect model, trust, reliability and respect can be gained through straight talk, listening for accepting and building commitments. In the case study, Chris wanted to trust the graduate associates and wanted them to perform tasks such as grading exams. He also stated that in most of the colleges, graduate associates are allowed to teach full time courses (Braun et al., 2013). Therefore, they can be trusted. However, Judi without conducting any straight talk with the graduate employees and without realising their commitments towards the organization wanted to limit the number jobs a graduate associate can perform (Sonea et al., 2015). Howard Jackson model of respect is a useful model that can help an organization to reach to their goals. It states that it trust is kept on an employee, does not matter how skilful he is, he will learn fast will perform accordingly. In the college, Judi showed a sense of disbelief on the graduate associates even though they were performing easy tasks such as grading the exams (Elahee Minor, 2015). This clearly indicates that the organization is not following the respect model of Howard and Jackson. Besides, if professors cannot outsource some of their jobs to graduate associates, then it will be tough for them to perform other jobs that strictly demand their skill and experience. Therefore, taking help from the graduate associates is also a time efficient matter. This is the reason that in the case study Chris is not supporting the idea of Judi and is ready to consult it with the higher authorities. After the meeting he also got support from a colleague who also believes that graduate associates should be trusted. Recommendation: After analysing the case study it can be stated that Judi and most of the board members do not want graduate associates to actively participate in serious jobs in the organization. On the other hand, Chris argued that graduate associates can easily perform tasks such grading exams which are objective type. Judi wants to develop some rules and regulations in order to prevent the graduate associates from taking part into active tasks. In this situation, it is recommended that Judi first of all must not implement any rules and regulations at the first place. She should discuss the matter with Chris who has experience in this scenario. Chris has experienced several situations where he saw that graduate associates are even teaching full time courses in the colleges. That means those associates are more than capable. Therefore, the organization in the first place must implement strategies which will identify and divide graduate associates based on their capabilities. It will help the organization to figure out which graduates are capable enough to grade exams. Graduate associates must be allowed to check grade exams as those are objective and answers are available for grading. It will allow professors to perform other tasks which cannot be done by the graduate associates. After the graduate associates have performed a task, senior professors should look into it in order to identify whether the task is done properly or not. This will not only help the professors to waste lesser amount of time in extra works but also will help graduate associates to gain trust of those professors. If such policies are made by Judi where graduate associates are not allowed to perform any type of grading related job, then Chris should take this matter to higher authority. Conclusion In the end it can be said that, currently Judi is not convinced at all that graduate associates can perform several tasks. She basically has not experience and idea about their capabilities and that is why she does not want to depend on them. However, Chris has faced such situations and knows that they can perform beyond expectation. However, as graduate associates are performing more complex tasks in other colleges, it can be said that Chriss arguments are correct and higher authorities must not limit the amount of task graduates can perform. Presidents Who Never Won a Presidential Election
Presidents Who Never Won a Presidential Election There are only five presidents in American history who never won a presidential election. The most recent was Republican Gerald Ford, the 38th president of the United States. Ford served from 1974 to 1977 and then left office in electoral defeat. Where some others assumed the presidency under tumultuous or tragic circumstances and then went on to win a second term, Ford is among a handful who failed to convince voters to return him to power after he ascended to the White House because his predecessor resigned. The other presidents who never won presidential elections were John Tyler,à Millard Fillmore,à Andrew Johnson, andà Chester A. Arthur. Ford is also among fewer than a dozen one-term presidentsà who ran for second terms but were denied by voters. So How Did Ford Become President? Ford was serving as vice president in 1974 amid scandal in President Richard M. Nixons administration. He ascended to the presidency when Nixon resigned before he was to face prosecution over the 1972 break-in at the Democratic Partys headquarters in what became known as theà Watergate scandal. Nixon was facing certain impeachment at the time.à As Ford said in taking the Oath of Office:à I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances. This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts. Did Ford Run for Re-Election? Yes. He won the Republican presidential nomination in 1976 but lost in the general election to Democrat Jimmy Carter, who went on to serve one term. Fords political fortunes sank amid a depressed economy, inflation, and energy shortages at home.à Ford and Carter had engaged in what is believed to be among the most important political debates in political history. The debate, many historians believe,à proved disastrous to Fords bid for a second term in the White House. Ford famously claimed, erroneously, the following: There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford administration. Fords statement was met with incredulity from moderator Max Frankel ofà The New York Timesà and served to tarnish his campaign. What About the Others Who Didnt Win Election? John Tyler became president when President William Henry Harrison died in office in 1841. Tyler could not muster enough support to sustain a legitimate presidential campaign.à Millard Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died in 1850. Fillmore sought his partys nomination for a second term but was denied.Andrew Johnson became president when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Johnson did not run for office after being impeached by Congress.à Chester A. Arthur became president after James Garfield was assassinated in 1881. Arthur did not run for re-election.

Effect on interest rates due to the investment in REITs Essay
Effect on interest rates due to the investment in REITs - Essay Example In the year 2007, the real estate industry in UK is about to give the chance to investors to invest in real estate investment trusts. This in turn may decrease the interest rates or at least remain at what they at the end of last quarter of 2006. These investments not only impact the interest rates but also, these provide the required liquidity to an asset class that is considered as inflexible. The historically inflexible asset turning into a flexible asset and the provision of the liquidity for it can decrease the demand for the bank loans. One of the factors that impact the interest rates is the liquidity of the assets. The increased liquidity of the assets of a company or the people can decrease the demand for the bank credit up to some extent. This will certainly show a negative effect on interest rates and is capable of decreasing them or can stop them from increasing. Generally the international transactions involve the risk regarding exchange rate. The interest rates also effect the forwards yet times.A contract is signed and for completion within 3 months. Generally any one thinks about the exchange rate of GBP with the currency of that country. If the interest rates are considered and if the UK rates are higher, there will be a higher cost for the forward contract. In this case one can sign forward contract with a firm in the country that is having higher interest than in UK. This will reduce the burden on the buyer if there is any delay in execution of contract. Donald Duk Essay Donald Duk is the story of a young man coming to terms of his identity as an American with Chinese descent and heritage. Donald felt that most Americans are prejudiced against Chinese so if he were to become American, he should reject his Chinese identity. Yet, at home, his parents also detest American culture. He began to be interested of his Chinese heritage because of the Central Pacific Railroad, which is a part of the Transcontinental Road built mostly by the Chinese immigrants. Women Deserve the Same Rights as Men Essay -- Argumentative Persuasive
Women Deserve the Same Rights as Men From the beginning of time, females have played a powerful role in the shaping of this world. They have stood by idly and watched as this country moved on without them, and yet they have demanded equal rights as the nation rolls along. Through the years the common belief has been that women could not perform as well as men in anything, but over the years that belief has been proven wrong time and time again. So as time marches on, women have clawed and fought their way up the ladder to gain much needed equal respect from the opposite sex. However, after many years of pain and suffering, the battle for equal rights has not yet been won. Since women have fought for a long time and proven their importance in society, they deserve the same rights as men. Before women can prove they too deserve the same rights as men, they must first put to rest the myths and beliefs of their status in this country. This myth of the female status in the United States, and in most other places in the world, has always been the same. It is the belief that women should be in the kitchen, taking care of the kids, and the house, amongst other beliefs. However, in today's society, this is considered ludicrous. For instance, in her essay, 'Ain't I a Woman?' Sojourner Truth delivers a powerful message and addresses the issues of women in the society. She argues that women should have equal rights, because they can do the same things as men. For example she says, ?That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place anywhere. Nobody helps me into no carriages, or over no mud puddles, or gives me any best place? (348). She, then, con... ...t women do not deserve the same rights as men, is not really a man, but instead a sad pitiful little boy who is a poor excuse of a life form. A real man would never disrespect a woman, because disrespecting the rights of any woman is just as disrespecting the rights of one?s own mother. They have fought long and hard and now they should get the equal rights which they rightly deserve. Works Cited Rich, Adrienne. ?What Does a Woman Need to Know The Presence of Others 3rd ed. Ed. Essay Nursing Ethic
In these situations I feel it is my duty to try to reach out to each patient from where they are coming room. If I have a patient who does not speak English utilize a trained interpreter or our Curaà §ao phone to help communicate with my patient. Sometimes this can be time consuming and put us behind schedule. We only have one interpreter and she is eve busy so sometimes we have to wait quite awhile for her to be available. This can put our providers behind schedule. It is very tempting in these situations to allow an employee who is not a trained interpreter but speaks the same language, or a family member to interpret. However, this does not follow clinic protocol and therefore is unethical. I work n an internal medicine clinic and most of our patients have multiple health issues. It would be very unfortunate if we missed a subtle but important change in the patient's health history because we didn't wait for the trained medical interpreter. The ethical dilemma in this situation is whether I should wait for the appropriate interpreter and potentially run the risk of frustrating sick patients who have to wait a long time to see their backed up provider, frustrate staff members who may not get a full lunch break or have to stay late because or utilize an inappropriate interpreter and take the chance of going something important in the translation. In my opinion, everyone deserves the best possible medical care regardless of where they are from or what language they speak. Legalize that morals are a very personal thing and that my morals may be different from the people I am caring for. I cannot let this change the way treat my patients. Sometimes this can be very difficult. When I worked in the operating room We had many traumas involving gang members who had been shot while committing a crime. We still had to work just as hard to save these people as we would anyone else. We used a lot of resources and did what we could to save them. I always found it startling how the staff members in the OR would talk about these people as we worked on them.I get that they are criminals but they are also human beings. Are job was to keep them alive, not judge them. This said, I had a situation that really caught me off guard and made it very difficult for my to be kind to this patient. I grew up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in a suburb of Chicago in the ass's. Almost everyone I knew had a family member who was a concentration camp sun,'ivory. It was an everyday occurrence to see an older person with the dreaded ââ¬Å"tattooâ⬠on their forearms. While interviewing my patient before going back to the OR we were talking and everything was fine.It wasn't until had to check her leg to make sure the surgery site was marked that I noticed she had a portrait tattoo of Doll Hitler. I was astounded. She had seemed perfectly polite and appropriate. Suddenly I could hardly look at her. I'm sure my voice became very short and clipped. Once we got her to sleep I couldn't stop talking (to anybody who would listen) about how appalled I was with her tattoo and her probable belief system. It wasn't until much later that I realized that I really let my own feelings interfere with the best possible treatment of my patient. The ethical dilemma in this situation is, should we treat unkind people the way we treat we would want to be treated. I feel very strongly about respecting others cultural beliefs, even when it comes to health choices made that may not think are the best thing for the patient. The only time I really struggle with this is when the men in a family want to make health decisions for the women. My personal opinion is ââ¬Å"if it's not your body, stay out of itâ⬠. However, unless the woman is being physically abused, it's none of my business. All I can do is give them the best possible information regarding their health, educate them in a culturally sensitive manner and offer them appropriate resources; the rest is up to them. Some days it can be very had to take others morals, values and ethics into consideration. I really try' to remember to treat others the way they want to be treated and not necessarily the way want to be treated. For someone as opinionated as me, this can be a struggle. Everyday is a new chance to do the best I can for my patients and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to do so.

The Dystopian Society Depicted in Brave New World, V...
It is commonplace for individuals to envision a perfect world; a utopian reality in which the world is a paradise, with equality, happiness and ideal perfection. Unfortunately, we live in a dystopian society and our world today is far from perfection. John Savage, from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, V, from V for Vendetta by James McTeigue and Offred, from The Handmaidââ¬â¢s Tale by Margret Attwood, are all characters in a dystopian society. A dystopia is the vision of a society in which conditions of life are miserable and are characterized by oppression, corruption of government, and abridgement of human rights. Unfortunately, corruption is government is a phenomenon far too prevalent in todayââ¬â¢s world. In the movie V for Vendetta, Vâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦V says, ââ¬Å"The truth is that something is terribly wrong with this country.â⬠Citizens are being targeted and taken away somewhere unknown. The fact is that something is horribly wrong with the country, and the source of it is the communist government. Furthermore, in the book Handmaidââ¬â¢s tale, abridgement of human rights, especially for women, is present. Offred, the protagonist of the book, is a handmaid. There is no equality in their world, especially for handmaids. Offred says, ââ¬Å"We are given tokens with pictures of the food we are supposed to get.â⬠Women are not allowed to read or write and are meant to be kept in their limited space. Men are allotted a disproportionate amount of personal freedom under this societal regime. The men hold the power to everything, including women; who are now their property. Offred says, ââ¬Å"Our names are given by placing ââ¬Ëofââ¬â¢ in front of the commanderââ¬â¢s name. Property of Fred.â⬠Women no longer have any rights, forced to live as bonded slaves. Handmaids are given their purpose in life, but they have no purpose in living. They are not allowed to have any sort pleasure in their life. ââ¬Å"Kissing is not allowed during the ceremony.â⬠There is no romance, no happiness, but men occupy all these. They go to clubs, stay with prostitutes and there is no one to stop them. The human rights of women no longer exist in this type of

Similarities & Differences In German & English Essays - Grammar
Similarities & Differences In German & English Jeremy Johnson September 26, 2000 Similarities and Differences All human communications involve language, and its use as such implies that there must be certain similarities. All languages have an alphabet, a lexicon, and a set of rules establishing how sentences are constructed. While there are differences in the alphabet, and lexicons of the various languages, the most important difference involving syntax are those found in the construction rules. English and German because of their shared root have many similarities, but through time they have developed substantial differences. The single most profound individual difference in German is the declension of case and gender. To decline case German changes the form of the noun and the corresponding pronoun to show the relationship the noun has to the verb. Das M?dchen i?t den Fisch The girl eats the fish The girl eats the fish Den Fisch i?t Das M?dchen The fish eats the girl The girl eats the fish Both ways of writing the sentence in German are and understandable. The determiner das declines M?dchen as the subject of the sentence while the determiner den declines Fisch as the direct object. In the English translations the meaning is derived by the word order, the first noun is the subject and the second is the direct object. In many cases the noun will change its form as well as the determiner, as with the noun der student, which becomes den studenten when it is used as the direct object. German also differs from English in that it declines gender with the determiner, and sometimes with the noun as in the following example: Wir suchen zu baldm?glichem Antritt eine freundliche Apothekerin (Vollzeit). Wir bieten eine We looking for soon possible beginning a friendly pharmacist (fulltime). We offer a We are looking for a friendly female pharmacist to begin as soon as possible. (Fulltime) eigenst?ndinge und verantwortungsvolle Arbeit in einem kleinen, freundlichen team. Own / permanent and responsible position in a small friendly team. Were offering a permanent and responsible position in a small, friendly team. The gender is shown within the determiner and the noun in the German sentence, while in the English sentence an additional word is required to convey female preference. The proceeding example also shows the declension of case in the last phrase in einem kleinen, freundlichen team. The phrase is in the dative case, which is indicated by the word einem, meaning it is the indirect object. A second difference between English and German lies in the use of the formal pronoun and verb form. The formal case is used to address those which one does not know well, or when one wants to be polite. Germans have the ability to conjugate their verbs as in the following example: Du hast - Familiar Sie Haben - Formal Old English used the pronoun you as the formal version of the verb, and the pronoun thou as the familiar pronoun as in: Thou hast Old English Familiar You have Current English Formal and Familiar The current English language has disposed of the familiar tense of addressing someone in the second person. Notice finally that the formal tense is also the plural in both languages. German and English share a striking similarity in how they deal with multiple negations. In the romance languages it is possible to use multiple negations such as in the following phrases in English and German: Not one person has not seen it. Kein Mensch nicht hat es gesehen. The example is not proper English although a similar phrase in French would be. The same phrase in German would also a violation of the languages grammar. The proper way to say the proceeding in English and German is Not one person has seen it Kein Mensch hat es gesehen English and German are odd amongst European languages in that they do not allow multiple negations within a single sentence. Englishs Germanic structural roots have more than likely given English its rules regarding negation. Although there are many similarities between the languages, the extensive use of declensions in German make it a much different language syntactically. Declensions allow German speakers to interchange the subject and direct object in sentences such as the one found in the first example. Gender declension adds a layer of complexity to German, which English does not have. Possibly because

Billgates Essays - Microsoft, Bill Gates, MS-DOS, OS2, Windows XP
Billgates William Henry Gates III was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1955. Bill was called Trey by his father, since Trey means three. Trey was always smart, and always loved even the earliest computers he could get his hands on. He went to a public school at first, and made a few friends there. He was pushing all the school had to offer to the limits, until his parents decided to send him to a private school. He at first didn't like the idea, but shortly after decided to go. The new school he went to, called Mothers' Club, was where he got his hands on his first computer. The mothers decided to have a rummage sale. The proceeds were used to buy a computer terminal, and buy computer time for the students. Trey said he has always been grateful for the computer bought, especially in the '60s, since computers were such an unusual thing to get at that time. The All through his teens, Trey as rebelling against his mother. He did everything his own way. He was always ! hard to get along with, unles s he had at least some control. That was, as I have read about him, the way his personality was. He went to a psychologist for a few years, because his mother refused to give in to Bill's rebellion. The psychologist just insisted that she must give in, because he couldn't help it, that was just the way he was. Bill wrote his first computer program, a version of tic tac toe, when he was only 13 years old! The way it worked was where each time you made a move on the keyboard, the extremely loud printer came out with the results slowly after each move. Although a 5 minute tic tac toe game could take as long as 2 hours, the kids at school, including Bill and his best friend, Paul Allen, liked it anyway since it was so extraordinary to be using what they actually made themselves. Bill and Paul were always best friends, and they were both very interested in computers. Paul was about four years older than Bill. When Bill went to college, in Ha! rvard. Paul got a job as a computer programme r while Bill was at his first two years in college. Paul constantly came to see Bill. One day, in December of '75,Paul came running to Bill with a magazine in his hand. The magazine was Popular Electronics, and on the cover was the Altair 8800, the first mini- computer kit. It was named after the planet in a Star Trek episode, Altair. Paul convinced Bill to start a company with him, and to drop out of Harvard. Bill, somewhat reluctantly, agreed. William Gates and Paul Allen started a company together, when Trey was 19, in 1976. They eventually decided to call it MicroSoft. The goal of Microsoft was to put a computer on every desk in every building. To make that happen, Microsoft aimed on compatibility. A few years after Microsoft was founded, Paul Allen left. He now owns a basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. Bill is now married to his wife, Melissa, and a daughter. Bill Gates PAGE 2: ACCOMPLISHMENTS With all the technology advances related to PC's during the beginning years in Microsoft, Bill Gates knew that in order to have a chance in the computer revolution that he pictured, he would have to jump in the open door, because I was closing fast. He knew that Microsoft would have to be in the PC industry from the beginning if he wanted it to stand a chance. This page of my report is all about how Microsoft stayed on top, and what Bill accomplished individually, this year, and in the last decade. Before Microsoft was founded, Paul Allen and Bill tried to use all the top chips they could to make software in it. Right before they founded Microsoft, they sent out Basic programs to all top companies, but no one answered him. They didn't accept it, probably because Bill and Allen were teenagers. After Microsoft was founded, however, they made foreign software for Japanese. They were making it for a long time, but
